The Cannaregio area is a charming quarter of Venice well known for the presence of the Jewish Ghetto and is the only area in Venice where it is possible to find some sort of medieval skyscrapers where Jews were forced to live during the years of the Republic of Venice.

With your guide, you will explore the lively Cannaregio area filled with artisans, fashion and accessory shops, artisans, bakeries, butchers or fruit shops.

It is very interesting to take a look at Cannaregio Coffee Roasting, a coffee shop where coffee beans are roasted in the tiny space behind the counter.

Walking along the north side of the Cannaregio district, the Sacca della Misericordia, you will have a look at the northern area of the lagoon and your guide will better explain the importance of water in the economy of Venice.

Explore the hidden Cannaregio area along Fondamenta degli Ormesini, a rather important area for Jewish culture right next to the Jewish quarter.

You will see the Ghetto, the Synagogues (from the outside), the Jewish Museums (from the outside), the Holocaust Memorial.

In the Cannaregio district there is a very strong presence of Tintoretto, the house where he lived, and the gothic church of the Madonna dell'Orto with the numerous works of art he painted and where his burial place is located.

If you are interested in visiting the three Synagogues and the Jewish Museum you can join a 1 hour tour led by Jewish community leaders every hour at 30:30 starting from 10:30 to 16:30. Cost: 12 Euro per person (to be paid locally).

F.A.Q.

  • Which Italian city is known as the city of canals?

The Italian city known as the "City of Canals" is Venice (Venezia). Venice is renowned for its network of picturesque canals, which serve as the primary mode of transportation throughout the city. Built on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges, Venice is famous for its romantic gondola rides along the winding waterways, historic architecture, and unique maritime culture. The Grand Canal, the main waterway that snakes through the heart of the city, is lined with elegant palaces, churches, and other architectural marvels, making Venice one of the most iconic and enchanting destinations in the world.

  • Is Cannaregio worth visiting?

Yes, Cannaregio is definitely worth visiting when you're in Venice. Cannaregio is one of the six historic sestieri (districts) of Venice, and it offers a more local and authentic experience compared to some of the more touristy areas of the city. Here are a few reasons why Cannaregio is worth exploring:

1. Authentic Venetian Atmosphere: Cannaregio is a residential neighborhood where locals live, work, and socialize. Visiting Cannaregio allows you to experience authentic Venetian life away from the crowds of tourists. You can stroll through the narrow streets, mingle with locals at neighborhood cafes and shops, and get a glimpse of daily life in Venice.

2. Jewish Ghetto: Cannaregio is home to the historic Jewish Ghetto, which was established in the 16th century and is one of the oldest Jewish ghettos in the world. Visiting the Jewish Ghetto allows you to learn about the rich history and culture of Venice's Jewish community. You can explore the Jewish Museum, synagogues, and kosher restaurants in the area.

3. Quiet Canals and Waterfront Views: Cannaregio is crisscrossed by a network of canals, including the Cannaregio Canal, which runs through the heart of the neighborhood. Taking a leisurely stroll along the canals allows you to enjoy beautiful waterfront views and discover hidden gems tucked away from the main tourist routes.

4. Historic Sites and Architecture: Cannaregio is home to several historic landmarks and architectural treasures, including the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, the Church of Madonna dell'Orto, and the Church of Sant'Alvise. You can also visit the Fondamenta della Misericordia, a lively promenade lined with bars and restaurants.

5. Local Cuisine: Cannaregio is known for its traditional Venetian cuisine, and you'll find plenty of trattorias and osterias serving authentic dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Be sure to sample specialties like sarde in saor (marinated sardines), risotto al nero di seppia (black squid ink risotto), and cicchetti (Venetian-style tapas).

Overall, Cannaregio offers a rich tapestry of history, culture, and cuisine that is well worth exploring during your visit to Venice. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, food, or simply soaking up the local atmosphere, Cannaregio has something for everyone.
