From Florence a private day trip to visit the historic medieval city of Lucca and the magnificent villas with their fabulous gardens around Lucca.
Lucca
Walking tour with your private guide to learn more about the importance of Lucca. The alley and the main attractions such as the Church of San Michele; the Romanesque Cathedral of San Martino with the Holy Face; the Guinigi Tower and more.
Lucca was founded by the Etruscans and became a Roman colony in 180 BC, the rectangular grid of the historic center of Lucca well preserves the Roman road system.
The town is surrounded by medieval defensive walls dating back to the sixteenth century and considered the best preserved in Italy. It was also the birthplace of the composer Giacomo Puccini
Villa Reale
From 1805 Napoleon's sister Elisa Baciocchi, sovereign of Lucca and then of all of Tuscany, created this grandiose "ensemble" by uniting Villa Orsetti - built in the 16th century for a powerful Tuscan family - with the surrounding properties, including the former residence summer of the Bishops of Lucca, erected in the seventeenth century.
She had the ancient Orsetti palace and its loggia restored in Empire style and preserved the splendid seventeenth-century gardens, with their marvelous open-air theater, the "Peschiera", the "Walk of the Camellias" and the "Grotta", which survive. this day.
There are a few places of particular interest here: the first is the 17th-century cave, which consists of a small circular stage attached to a cave, which is delightfully cool and filled with deliberately carved carvings.
This was where guests played water games: invisible fountains gushed jets of mineral and cool sprays, and the nobles and women rushed at each other, clawing at each other's moistened, transparent clothes, and ... Before you leave, ask your guide to turn on the taps and watch the streams of water gurgle from the floors and down the ceilings - you'll wish you could participate.
The next must-see is a delightful driveway lined with potted lemon trees (in bloom if you're there in late spring or early summer) that leads to a floating pool with swans.
Finally, continue on to the main house, where your guide will take you to an open-air theater made entirely from nature: a low mound forms the stage itself, and rows of carefully trimmed box hedges form the backstage and backstage.
Villa Torrigiani
Villa Torrigiani, a 16th century palace still owned by the same noble family whose upper floors are still inhabited by the family during the summer; the villa is a fascinating time capsule and the well-preserved objects on display (paintings, bedding, clothes and porcelain) tell an interesting story about the life of the Tuscan nobility through the centuries.
The villa is surrounded by a magnificent park and the heart of the park is the Ninfeo dei Venti, so named for the statues that personify the winds, where the paths converge.
