Your day trip begins in the morning from your hotel in Florence, where you will meet your private English-speaking driver.

Traveling through the Tuscan countryside your driver will take you to the magnificent cities of Pisa and Lucca, where in each city you will have free time for a visit at your own pace.

The origin of Lucca dates back to the Etruscans and became a Roman colony in 180 BC, Lucca became prosperous thanks to the silk trade which began in the 11th century and is currently still surrounded by medieval defense walls dating back to the 16th century and considered the best preserved in Italy.

Even today, the walls surrounding the historic center of Lucca are large enough to be used by everyone as a public park.

Lucca was also the birthplace of one of the most famous Italian opera composers, the composer Giacomo Puccini who wrote unforgettable operas such as Tosca, Turandot, Boehme, Madama Butterfly, just to name a few of his most famous works.

Visiting Lucca, your attention will be captured by the imposing marble facade of the Church of San Michele dedicated to the Archangel Michael, the Romanesque Cathedral of San Martino with the Holy Face and the tomb of Ilaria del Carretto, the Guinigi Tower today symbol of the city, Piazza Napoleone which represents the political center of Lucca, the elegant shops of Via Fillungo, the Roman Amphitheater.

In Pisa, you'll have time to explore the Piazza dei Miracoli, a concentration of historic artworks, at your own pace.

The Cathedral, built in the 11th century in the period of maximum splendor of Pisa when Pisa was one of the four Maritime Republics, is a masterpiece of Romanesque-Pisan architecture.

The Baptistery where the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei was baptized in 1564 and the amazing Leaning Tower just behind the Cathedral whose construction work began in the XII century.

F.A.Q.

  • Who built the Leaning Tower of Pisa?

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, one of the most iconic architectural wonders in the world, was not the result of a single construction effort but rather the work of multiple architects and builders over several decades.

The construction of the tower began in 1173 during the medieval period, as part of a larger project to build the Piazza del Duomo, which also includes the Pisa Cathedral (Duomo di Pisa) and the Baptistry. The tower was intended to serve as the cathedral's bell tower.

The initial phase of construction was overseen by the architect Bonanno Pisano, who designed the tower to stand vertically. However, due to the tower's foundation being built on unstable soil composed of clay, fine sand, and shells, as well as inadequate planning and construction techniques, the tower began to lean even before the completion of the third floor.

Subsequent attempts to compensate for the lean were made by various architects and engineers over the following centuries. However, these efforts only exacerbated the problem, causing the tower to lean further.

Despite its unintended tilt, construction on the tower continued intermittently for nearly two centuries, with pauses due to wars, funding shortages, and engineering challenges. During this time, the tower's lean became its defining characteristic, attracting visitors from around the world intrigued by its unusual appearance.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa was finally completed in 1372, when the seventh and final floor was added. The tower stands approximately 56 meters (183 feet) tall on the highest side and about 55 meters (181 feet) on the lower side, with a lean of about 3.97 degrees from the vertical.

While Bonanno Pisano initiated the construction of the tower, its lean and subsequent modifications were the result of the collective efforts of multiple architects, engineers, and builders over several centuries. Today, the Leaning Tower of Pisa remains not only a symbol of architectural marvel but also a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance in the face of engineering challenges.
