At the Borghese Gallery admire the enormous art collection collected by Borghese family and mainly by Cardinal Scipione Borghese: paintings and sculptures, both ancient and from his time, creating an extraordinary and unique collection including masterpieces by Bernini, Canova, Caravaggio, Tiziano and other exceptional artists.

Explore the Borghese Gardens, Rome's largest park with sculptures and fountains, before heading to the Pincio Terrace overlooking Piazza del Popolo.

The Villa Borghese, Rome's most significant green park, is located completely around the Borghese Gallery.
The park of Villa Borghese, which spans over 70 hectares and has numerous smaller buildings, contains the Pincio area, where a sizable balcony looks out over Piazza del Popolo and the dome of St. Peter's Basilica can be seen in the distance.

Your knowledgeable guide will tell you about Cardinal Scipione Borghese during the Borghese Gallery tour, who had a special interest in the paintings by Caravaggio and Bernini.
As you walk through the Borghese Gallery's various rooms, you'll see works by these two artists, among others: David with the head of Goliath and St. John the Baptist in the Desert by Caravaggio; David and Apollo and Daphne by Bernini.

The extensive collection also includes numerous additional works, such as Piero della Francesca's Flagellation, Beato Angelico's Ascension and Pentecost, Paolina Bonaparte by Canova, and the Last Judgment.

Two hours are allotted for the visit to the Borghese Gallery, followed by a tour of the Villa Borghese park, which features fountains, sculptures, and monuments.

Your guide will also show you the area of the park that contains the Cardinal Borghese Secret Garden and take you to the Pincio Terrace where you can see Rome and Piazza del Popolo.

  • What is the story behind Villa Borghese?

Villa Borghese is a large public park in Rome, Italy, that covers an area of about 80 hectares (148 acres). It is situated in the historical center of Rome, just north of the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo.

The story of Villa Borghese dates back to the early 17th century when it was originally a vineyard and estate belonging to the Borghese family, one of the most prominent and powerful families in Rome during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The estate was acquired by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the nephew of Pope Paul V, in 1605.

Cardinal Scipione Borghese was a great patron of the arts and an avid collector. He transformed the estate into a magnificent villa surrounded by extensive gardens, which were adorned with sculptures, fountains, and other artistic features. The cardinal commissioned renowned artists such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini to create works for the villa's gardens, including the famous "Rape of Proserpina" and "Apollo and Daphne" sculptures.

Over the centuries, the villa and its grounds underwent various changes and renovations under different owners. In the 19th century, the Borghese family sold the villa to the Italian government, and it was eventually opened to the public as a park in the early 20th century.

Today, Villa Borghese is a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike, offering beautiful landscaped gardens, walking paths, ponds, museums, and cultural institutions. It houses the Borghese Gallery, which displays a remarkable collection of art including works by Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian, and Bernini, among others.

The park also features recreational facilities such as playgrounds, a zoo, and a lake where visitors can rent rowboats. Villa Borghese remains one of the most beloved green spaces in Rome, providing a tranquil retreat from the bustling city streets.
