F.A.Q.

  • How Venice was built?

Venice, often referred to as the "Floating City," was built on a series of 118 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. The city's unique construction began around the 5th century AD when people sought refuge from invading barbarian tribes on the mainland.

The foundation of Venice is a complex network of wooden pilings driven into the marshy ground, upon which the buildings and streets are constructed. These pilings, made from wood such as alder, pine, and oak, were driven deep into the soft clay and sand to provide stability for the structures above.

Over the centuries, Venice's builders developed innovative construction techniques to adapt to the city's watery environment. Buildings were constructed using a combination of wood, brick, and stone, with wooden beams often used to support the upper floors.

To create a stable foundation for grand buildings such as palaces and churches, massive wooden platforms called "raft foundations" were constructed. These platforms distributed the weight of the buildings more evenly and helped prevent them from sinking into the soft ground.

The city's intricate network of canals served as both transportation routes and drainage systems, helping to manage the water that constantly surrounded the city. Venetians developed expertise in hydraulic engineering, constructing a series of sluice gates and flood barriers to protect the city from high tides and flooding.

The construction of Venice was a testament to human ingenuity and adaptability, as the city's architects and engineers found innovative ways to build and thrive in a challenging environment. Today, Venice's unique architectural heritage and its intricate network of canals continue to attract visitors from around the world, showcasing the enduring legacy of this remarkable city built upon the water.
